MacVotes Federal Elections 2015
On October 19, 2015, Canadians will go to the polls to elect their next federal government. MacVotes is an initiative by the McMaster Students Union to ensure that McMaster students have the tools and information they need to cast informed ballots.
Voting is an important and powerful function of our democratic rights. Voting enables us to voice our opinions and influence the direction our country takes. As post-secondary students, we are eligible to vote as long as we are Canadian citizens over the age of 18, residing in a local federal riding. You can vote where you go to school or in your hometown, and help elect the member of parliament (MP) you feel best represents you.
It is important for students to take an informed stance, especially given the declining voter turnout in federal elections. The 18-24 year old demographic constitutes a whopping 37.4% of eligible voters. However, only 35.6% of eligible first-time voters participated during the last federal election.
As students, you represent a large and vital demographic. In order to communicate what you feel are pressing issues, it is important that you are informed and ready to vote whether it be via Advanced Polling, Satellite Polling, Voting by Mail, or on Election Day (October 19). So take the time to look over the information on this site and review the Election FAQs, the Federal Candidates and their Parties, and, if you wish to vote in McMaster’s riding (Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas), our local candidates. Read more into the issues that matter to you, be it student debt, environmental policy, or economic policy. Follow debates leading up to the election, and don't hesitate to get involved and ask questions relevant to you. Visit this page often to stay up to date, and share your thoughts and opinions with us via Twitter and Facebook while spreading the word with the#MacVotes hashtag
