De-stressors, events and operating hours during exam season

McMaster University begins the fall exam period on Friday, December 6. Various offices and services across campus offer expanded hours and service delivery during the exam period. In addition, many departments have de-stressor events planned for the month of December.

MSU Food Collective Centre (FCC)

There is a CommunityKitchen on Thursday, December 5 from 4PM – 7PM in Alumni House, whereattendees will be making Japanese Curry & Chicken Katsufor the workshop. Click hereto sign up on EventBrite for the event, as there are a limited number of spots available for the workshop.

FCC is also hosting a Study Snack Events, where there will be open rooms in MUSC for students to come study, with provide snacks and beverages provided.

The following rooms are booked from 8PM – 12AM: 

  • Tuesday - MUSC 318
  • Wednesday - MUSC 206/207
  • Thursday - MUSC 206/207
  • Friday - MUSC 311/313

MSU SHEC

SHEC and SWHAT are returning with a #SHECares Exam Care Package giveaway this year, featuring tea bags, a snack, pencils, earplugs, laptop stickers, tissues, bubblewrap, and a self-care suggestion card with resources for students in each package. Volunteers from the services will hand out the care packages on the following dates from 1 - 3PM in:

  • Mills Library and Health Sciences Library lobbies on Monday, December 9
  • Thode Library and McMaster University Student Centre lobbies on Friday, December 13
  • Innis Library and Institute for Applied Health Sciences lobbies on Wednesday, December 18

MSU SWHAT

The Student Walk Home Attendant Team (SWHAT) is offering a Thode Exam season pop-up, offering walks from Thode (in addition to regular operations out of MUSC 234) during December 9 to 12 and 16to 18 from 9PM – 1AM.

For the next three weeks, SWHAT is holding SWHAT Chocolate every Wednesday from 6 – 7PM at Mills Library, giving out items such as pens and stickers with free hot chocolate and tea.

MSU Maroons

The Maroons are hosting Exam Giveaways: students can enter on their Facebookor Instagramto win MUJI notebooks and pens, and a $20 Starbucks gift card. The contest closes at 9pm on Friday, December 6.

Keep an eye out on the Maroons social media for additional giveaways, as the service will be distributing exam care packages throughout McMaster libraries during the upcoming weeks.

MSU Compass Information Centre

The 2018 - 2019 exam / holiday hours of operation for Compass are 11:45AM - 5:15 PM starting December 5. The last day of operations will be December 19th, and Compass will be closed for the holidays until January 6.

MSU TwelvEighty and The Grind

From Monday to Friday until December 13, TwelvEighty is open from 11AM - 5PM and The Grind is open from 9AM - 5PM. Both will close early at 3PM on December 16 and 17 before closing for the holiday season until January 6. 

MSU Union Market

Until December 19, Union Market is open during the following hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 8:00AM - 11:00PM
  • Saturday: 9:00AM - 6:00PM
  • Sunday: 9:00AM - 11:00PM

McMaster Hospitality Services

Hospitality Services has altered hours of operations for food and beverage locations across campus. To access the hours for exam season and the holiday season, click here

Student Success Centre

This year, the Student Success Centre has various events to help cheer students on during exam season. On December 6 from 10AM - 1PM, students can stop by the Student Success Centre (GH 110) to grab a free beverage (smoothies, coffee, and tea, while supplies last). On December 8, there is a Toronto Raptors basketball game viewing party in the Student Success Centre, with doors opening at 5:30PM. On December 10 from 11:30AM - 4PM, there is two featured crafts in the Student Success Centre: Beading Bookmarks and Ugly Sweater/Hat Decorating (while supplies last). Alumni Associaiton

This year, McMaster Univeristy Alumni Association is hosting Exam Wishes and Plant Pot Painting. The highly anticipated Exam Wishes will be taking place on December 9, 13, and 16. Students will be able to submit their“exam wishes” through the Instagram account and have a chance at having their wish fulfilled by the Alumni Advancement team.

Plant Pot Painting will take place on December 11 (time and place TBA). Plants will be available and distributed to students in order to have the pots painted, so they can be brought home and nurtured over exam season. Students will be able to keep the plant after they paint its pot.

The Pulse + free yoga and meditation classes

The Pulse is open for the following regular term hours until December 15:

  • Monday to Friday: 6:00AM - 12:30AM
  • Saturday and Sunday: 8:30AM - 10:30PM

The Pulse has the following exam hours from December 16 – 24:

  • Monday to Friday: 6:00AM - 10:30PM
  • Saturday and Sunday: 8:30AM-4:30PM
  • December 24: 6AM – 12PM

The Pulse will be closed from December 24 at noon and will reopen under exam hours on January 2, returning to regular hours on Monday, January 6.

As part of #MacMoves, Stress-Less Spin Day is happening on December 5 in the Cycling Studio within the Pulse. From 9:30AM – 9:15AM, there will be free 30-minute spin classes with different themes starting at the 30-minute mark of every hour. Free recovery snacks will be available to every participant and #MacMoves swag will be given to one participant in each class.

The Mindfulness Centre in DBAC is also open to students for meditating, breathing, or stretching. In this space, there are free exam stress relief yoga and meditation classes being offered by McMaster Athletics & Recreation. The 55-minute-long classes are open and free only to McMaster students, DBAC members, staff, and faculty. They are drop-in and no registration is required, however space is limited.

  • Tuesday, December 10 – 12:00PM to 12:55PM
  • Tuesday, December 10 - 6:30PM to 7:25PM

  • Thursday, December 12 - 8:00PM to 8:55PM
  • Sunday, December 15 - 7:00PM to 7:55PM
  • Monday, December 16 - 5:00PM to 5:55PM

  • Tuesday, December 17 - 6:30PM to 7:25PM

The dates and times for Meditation - Exam Stress Relief are on Mondays from December 9 to December 16, from 1:30PM - 2:25PM.

Libraries

The annual McMaster Libraries Holiday Toy and Food Drive in support of local Hamilton charities is now happening, ending December 17, 2019. Non-perishable food items, new/unwrapped toys for children up to the age of 16, gift certificates for teens, and family pet food/toys are encouraged. Donation boxes are located at Innis, Mills and Thode Libraries.

Innis Library

Innis is open from 8:30AM until 1:45AM for a silent late-night study, Monday through Thursday. On Friday, Innis is open from 8:30AM - 10:45PM. On Saturday, the hours are 10:30AM - 5:45PM. On Sunday, the hours are 1:00PM - 7:45PM. There are special hours on December 19 from 8:30AM - 7:45PM, and on December 20 from 9:00AM - 4:45PM. 

Mills Library

Mills Library is open from 8:00AM - 10:45PM, Monday through Friday. On Saturday, Mills is open from 10:30AM - 10:45PM, and from 12PM - 10:45PM on Sunday. The Learning Commons is open 24/7 Monday through Sunday. There are special hours on December 19 from 8:00AM - 8:00PM in the library and Learning Commons. On December 20, only the library is opening from 9:00AM - 4:45PM.

Thode Library

Thode is open 24/7 until December 19. There are special hours on December 19 from 8:30AM - 7:45PM and December 20 from 9:00AM - 4:45PM.

Health Sciences Library

HSL is open from 8:00AM until 10:45PM Monday through Thursday. On Friday, HSL is open from 8:00AM - 9:45PM. On Saturday, the hours are 10:00AM - 6:45PM. On Sunday, the hours are 10:00AM - 10:45PM. There are special hours on December 19 from 8AM – 7:45PM and December 20 from 9:00AM - 4:45PM.

HSL’s dog Riley is coming for a visit on December 11 from 2 – 3PM. Also, HSL is collecting pre-packaged snacks, including granola bars, dried fruit, crackers, snack-sized bags of chips, and juice boxes to be donated to the close by Ronald McDonald House to help ensure their kitchens remain full during this busy time of year.
