First Aid & CPR courses offered by EFRT
February 12, 2020 at 09:00 am
The Emergency First Response Team (EFRT) offers First Aid and CPR courses throughout the year under Canadian Red Cross standards. The courses are taught by current EFRT responders who have extensive practice using the skills taught in real-world scenarios. The courses are highly interactive and filled with practical examples, going beyond the medical skills to also prepare students for the psychological challenges of responding to an emergency.
The next available date for Standard First Aid and CPR-C Certification courses is February 15. Both are blended learning courses, which include 8 hours of online content and 8 hours in person. To sign up for the courses on February 15 and to view their respective costs, click here. There are also blended courses offered on March 21, April 11, and April 19, while CPR-BLS is offered on April 4/5.
Sophia Topper, EFRT Assistant Director, highlights the practical nature of EFRT courses, which helps prepare students for emergencies.
“For instance, we acknowledge that you might not have a fully-stocked first aid kit with you every moment and we are able to help students learn how to think outside the box and use mundane equipment,” says Topper. “We don't teach students just what they need to do, but why they need to do certain things, which is what gives them the agency to apply skills flexibly.”
Courses taught by EFRT are approved by the Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) and will meet the requirements set out by one’s employer and/or faculty. Please remember to register early as courses tend to fill up weeks in advance. For a blended course, one must register before the Wednesday prior to the course in order to ensure sufficient time to complete the online content prior to the in-person segment.
