The election of MSU Vice Presidents and Speaker for 2020/2021 will take place April 18 and 19
March 24, 2020 at 12:00 pm
Each year, the Student Representative Assembly (SRA) meets infrequently during the summer months. As such, the SRA empowers the MSU’s Executive Board to fulfil all relevant operations of the organization between the end of April and the beginning of September.
Given the Covid-19 pandemic, and the inability to have in-person meetings at this time, the MSU has ceased all in-person operations on-campus. This stoppage includes political meetings of the SRA. However, the SRA has approved its summer measures early this year, thus allowing the Executive Board to make organizational decisions as needed, effectively immediately. The Executive Board will continue to meet remotely via video and telephone conferencing.
The Executive Board, however, cannot change bylaws, approve SRA meeting minutes, pass the annual budget, nor elect the MSU Vice Presidents for next year. Contingency planning for Vice Presidential and MSU Speaker elections is already underway. Vice President and Speaker elections have been re-scheduled from the original date of April 4 and 5 until April 18 and 19. The SRA will not meet in-person to host the elections, rather it will take place in a digital space. Logistical planning for the elections is currently underway and will be communicated to candidates directly.
Vice President and Speaker elections:
Any full-time undergraduate student (enrolled in 18 or more units) is eligible to run for election. Those who are interested can learn more about the three Vice Presidential roles here, and through reading Bylaw 4 - Officers, or contact any one of the sitting VPs Education, Administration, or Finance with specific questions.
Together with MSU President, the Vice Presidents comprise the MSU Board of Directors (BoD). The BoD has a variety of different responsibilities within the organization and to the undergraduate students of McMaster University. This Board is collectively employed for a year-long term, governing the daily operations of the MSU.
The MSU Speaker is responsible for presiding over meetings of the SRA and meetings of the General Assembly, ensuring that they run smoothly according to constitutional procedures in a fair and equitable manner. Questions about the role of MSU Speaker can be sent directly to email@example.com.
