Student health and dental benefit coverage extended through September 2020

Ontario’s Minister of Health has announced the potential reopening of numerous health services, currently unavailable due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Dentists, Optometrists, Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, Psychologists, Dietitians, along with other professions, can begin to take clients again, provided their respective governing colleges lay out safety protocols and approve a resumption of service.
For students, this means that many of the benefits covered by the MSU health and dental insurance plans, will become available again in the near future. When health services resume, students can access their plan benefits immediately. In addition, the plan provider (We Speak Student) has already extended coverage to compensate for lost time.
The student plans traditionally cover the period from September 1 to August 31 each academic year. For 2020, however, coverage will extend to September 30. Therefore, a recent graduate will keep their coverage until the end of September 2020. Students entering their second through fourth years, can use their 2019/2020 benefits for medical and dental costs until September 2020. Thus, preserving the full amount of 2020/2021 benefit allotments to be used between October 2020 and August 2021.
In addition to the health and dental insurance, students also have access to the Student Assistance Plan (SAP). The SAP offers McMaster students, their roommates, and family members free, confidential access to a variety of wellness and mental health services. Counsellors, legal experts, financial consultants, nutritionists, and life coaches are all available, though 24/7, multi-lingual, online support. Learn more and access the SAP here.
