Green Roof Initiative

August 7, 2012 at 16:32 pm

Green roofs are a fantastic way of ensuring McMaster is an environmentally conscious university campus. This idea was originally brought forward by a group of students from OPIRG and since my election as President, I have been working to bring this idea to fruition.

Renovating the balcony space on the third floor of MUSC (located to the right of CIBC Hall), would maximize a space that we already have, making it more aesthetically pleasing. It would also create additional space that students could use to relax, study, eat meals etc.

The Green Roof will support biodiversity, catch rainwater, reduce the amount of airborne pollutants, and add oxygen to the surrounding atmosphere.

We are currently gathering feedback for the MSU Green Roof Initiative. Please fill out this survey and have your thoughts reflected in the space. There are four prizes of $25 in Union Market gift certificates . We will randomly award the four prizes amongst everyone who leaves their email at the beginning of the survey.

Mel Fox-Chen, an intern from the Office of Sustainability has completed the following report on green roofs and best practices on urban green spaces.  Click here if you are looking to learn more.
