Nominations are Open for First Year Council

September 8, 2015 at 16:51 pm

Nominations for the McMaster Students Union (MSU) First Year Council (FYC) are currently open. FYC is a representative body operated entirely by McMaster first year students. Its purpose is to inform and speak for the distinctive needs and concerns of first year students in the MSU and at McMaster University. FYC members are elected each fall by their peers, with membership open to all full-time first year undergraduate students.

The nomination period opened on September 1st and closes on September 21st. Five positions are available. Nomination packages for each position can be downloaded from the MSU website. They can also be picked up in person at the front desk in the MSU office, in the McMaster University Student Centre, Room 201. There will also be packages available for pickup at ClubsFest on September 9th.

Candidates will have the opportunity to campaign from the 22nd to the 30th, with polling on the 29th and 30th. Polling will be conducted entirely online. All first year students will receive emails throughout the polling period reminding them to log into the online voting system. To vote, students will require only their MacID and password.

There will be Elections 101 nights in selected residences on September 15th and 16th. These information sessions will give first year students the opportunity to learn about FYC elections as well as other advocacy opportunities within residences and faculty societies. The locations of these sessions will be announced as soon as possible. All first year students are welcome to attend, regardless of whether they live in the residence where a session is being held.

"We have a fantastic opportunity exclusively for first years," said Priya Gupta, Chief Returning Officer (CRO) for the MSU. "FYC is the premier organization for representing and lobbying the needs of first year students, so who better to run it than first year students themselves?"
