Exceptional Student Leaders honoured at 37th annual Student Recognition Night

The McMaster Students Union and McMaster University came together to celebrate student leadership at the 37th annual Student Recognition Night on March 29 at LiUNA Station. The 2017 MSU Awards were presented to several students and student groups in recognition of their hard work and dedication to improve the experiences of McMaster undergraduates.

Awards were presented in seven different categories, recognizing a variety of achievements over the last year, or over the winners’ careers at McMaster University. For more information concerning each individual reward criteria, click here.

The MSU congratulates the following students and groups on their achievements:

J. LYNN WATSON AWARD FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE
The J. Lynn Watson Award for Community service has been presented annually since 1983 to the campus group that has made the greatest one-year contribution to charitable giving.

Winner: The Citizens Foundation


MSU SPIRIT AWARD
The MSU Spirit Award is presented annually to the campus group that has demonstrated superior spirit. Nominees for this award represent enthusiasm, dedication, and increasing school spirit at McMaster University. 

Winner: Mac Farmstand


SRA MEMBER OF THE YEAR
The Student Representative Assembly is comprised of 35 elected members of the MSU. Together, these students work to provide the best possible MSU services and departments, represent and address the concerns of undergraduate students, and lobby the University to improve McMaster’s academic quality.

Winner: Megan Hsu

 

PART TIME MANAGER OF THE YEAR
Part Time Managers run many of our services, such as the MAC BreadBin, the Queer Students Community Centre, and the Horizons Conference. Together, our services and the people who work and volunteer in them help to better the experience on our campus.

Winner: Stephanie Black

 

MSU MERIT SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
The MSU Merit Scholarship Award recognizes outstanding and valuable services to university, student, or residence governments, departments, clubs, societies, charities, or athletics. There are two categories in which scholarships are awarded: single year contribution, and overall achievement.

Winner (single year): David Lee
Winner (overall): Lindsay D'Souza
Winner (overall): Ruchika Gothoskar

 

RUDY HEINZL AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
The Rudy Heinzl Award of Excellence was created to recognize the uncommon dedication to the concerns of students of former Dean of Students, Rudy Heinzl. Through this award, the MSU honours his contribution by commemorating the work of others who have similarly contributed to the well being of McMaster’s student community.

Winner: Frank Chen

 

HONOUR M AWARD
Presented annually since 1932, the Honour M Award is the highest award that the MSU bestows. The Honour M is awarded in recognition of outstanding leadership, volunteer service, contribution and/or special achievement in extra curricular activities. A nominee’s contributions may have been rendered in such areas as university, student, or residence government, clubs, societies, charities, or athletics.

Winners: Pearl Almeida, Megan Hsu, Daniel Tuba D'Souza
