Dr. Peter James George: 1941 – 2017

May 1, 2017 at 12:00 pm

As a professor, administrator and president, Dr. Peter George was an incredible advocate for students and student life. He will be dearly missed by everyone at McMaster, not the least of which by the McMaster Students Union, and its members both current and past.

During his first days as President of McMaster University, he made it a priority to realize a dream of full-time undergraduate students. To create a place to call their own, McMaster students and their new University president set about on the path to create the McMaster University Student Centre, which opened in 2002.  In doing so, Dr. George created a culture that made it clear to faculty, staff and administration that the McMaster experience must be ‘student centred’. A notion that carries on in the University’s mission statement to this day. He embodied this mantra, practising it daily.

Beyond the buildings and the culture he imbued on campus, there was the person.  For decades as a professor, Dean of Social Sciences, and as President of McMaster University, Dr. George always made time to meet with MSU representatives.  Be it professional, personal or adversarial, the MSU President was always advanced to the front of the line if there was an issue to address.  With thoughtful reflection, humorous anecdotes and insight from stakeholders, a clear path would be mutually agreed upon. This level of respect between university leadership and its student union remains the envy of student associations across Canada.

Thank you Dr. George. You will be profoundly missed.

As per the wishes of his family, “In lieu of flowers, please go and tell your dear ones you love them and why, or live your love in acts of kindness and thoughtfulness every day the way Peter did. Donations to Wellwood Cancer Resource Centre or The Peter George Centre for Living and Learning at McMaster University will also be gratefully received." [Obituary]
