The McMaster Students Union Shinerama campaign is a nation-wide campaign that focuses on raising funds and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) research and care. CF primarily affects the lungs and digestive system, and is the most common fatal genetic disease amongst young Canadians. Each year, 35,000 student volunteers from over 50 Canadian universities and join forces to make a difference in the lives of those living with CF. The 2017 MSU campaign has raised just over $15,000 to date, and is well on its way to surpassing this year’s goal of $110,000.
Various student-led teams have been hard at work to raise money for Shinerama. Summer fundraisers span all of Hamilton in the form of bottle and textbook drives, car washes, coffee houses, a golf tournament, and more.
This Welcome Week will be a blend of classics and new Shinerama events. Favourites such as the Monday Night Charity Casino, Bling Bling, and Bounce-A-Thon will continue. New this year, there will be a Shine Photo-booth offering digital and polaroid photos to capture all the Welcome Week memories. The Friday of Welcome Week, the largest fundraiser will occur - Shine Day. Shine Day will be accompanied by another fresh new event: Shine Games. Welcome Week efforts will come to an end with the PJ Parade and Westfest celebration inside the Westdale community, where Shinerama hopes to announce its overall fundraising total.
It is estimated that for every year of Shinerama efforts, the median age of survival of a person living with CF is 10 months. Let us come together to make CF stand for “Cure Found”!
