September 25, 2017 at 09:00 am
Open as of September 18th for 2017-2018, the MSU Women and Gender Equity Network is a service that caters to serve women, transfolk, people who identify outside the gender binary, and all survivors of sexual assault. Providing a safe(r) space on campus in MUSC 204, WGEN exists as a shared learning space for people to talk, receive peer support and bond through similar experiences.
One can access WGEN Monday to Thursday from 9:30 AM - 5:30 PM, and on Fridays from 10:30 AM - 3:30 PM. Additionally, anyone can book one-on-one appointments for peer support by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. WGEN also has a library with different resources available for use by the McMaster community and holds events targeted at building community, runs educational workshops and campaigns designed to advocate and educate on behalf of and with the groups WGEN supports.
One of the aims of WGEN is to build understanding around gender equity and sexual violence prevention and response. In 2016, McMaster University instated the Sexual Violence Response Protocol in an effort to improve and increase consistency within support given to survivors of sexual assault. WGEN was involved in consulting on the protocol through the Violence Against Women and Gender Based Violence Working Group, soliciting student feedback on the protocol and offering recommendations towards improving the protocol.
Going forward, WGEN will continue to compile student feedback as an ongoing evaluation process in order to support any amendments or improvements to the protocol.
