Extended November hours for Peer Support Line

Peer Support Line (PSL) is a confidential service that provides peer-based emotional support for McMaster students. One can access the service by calling 905-525-9140 ext. 28888 or clicking here to chat online. For the month of November, PSL has extended hours to offer increased support for students in light of midterms and upcoming exams. The service will be operating from 7 PM to 2 AM Sunday to Thursday in November, with the regular hours of service from 7 PM to 1 AM remaining Friday through Saturday.
The coordinator of PSL, Lucia Lee, wants to encourage all students to use the line, even if they are only remotely considering it. She explains that peer support can come in a variety of forms and is wanted or needed for many different reasons.
“Many of us, including myself, struggle with this sense of guilt when we access services such as PSL, due to a tendency to minimize our problems and convince ourselves that we don’t necessarily deserve the services as much as others,” said Lee. “This belief is untrue because what we are going through is unique to each individual - for some, it can mean getting another perspective on their situation, while for others it is about having someone to listen, vent, or talk to.”
PSL is holding Chat and Chill, a workshop on November 9 from 6 PM - 7 PM in collaboration with Residence Life. This event is an opportunity to discuss ways in which students can take care of themselves and each other. There will be free healthy food and beverages given out at the event, de-stressor activities and peer support volunteers available. To tailor the event to the individuals attending it, students are encouraged to use the anonymous, confidential form to share ideas for discussion topics.
