De-stressors, events and hours during exam season

MSU Peer Support Line and MSU Mac Bread Bin

Peer Support Line and Mac Bread Bin are hosting fourlate-night study sessions called Study, Snack, & Support. Each session will run from 8PM - 12AM with free healthy food, coffee, and tea. There will also be peer support volunteers available and de-stressor activities for those feeling overwhelmed or stressed, including blowing bubbles, bubble wrap, and colouring. All students, regardless of the courses they are taking, are welcome to come out to re-energize with food, study, de-stress and receive support. In addition, there will be upper year tutors from the McMaster Science Society and the McMaster Humanities Society to offer course-specific support.

The first study session is December 7, with tutors for PSYCH 1X03, MATH 1LS3 and HUMANITIES 1QA3 (writing workshop) to help answer questions. The second session on December 13 will feature tutors for CHEM 2A03 and CHEM 1A03, and the third session on December 16 will have ECON 1B03 tutors. Lastly, the fourth and final session will be on December 18 and have tutors for ECON 1BB3 and BIO 1A03. These dates are set up to be two to three days before the relevant exam so tutors can provide help in advance.


To ensure students are getting home safely from studying, SWHAT will be popping up in Thode Library from 9PM - 1AM on December 13th and 15th to offer walks home. There will be a group of volunteers available at the location during the scheduled time.

SWHAT will also be operating during their normal hours of 7PM to 1AM seven days a week during the exam season, with their last day of operation as December 20. To request a walk, students can drop by the SWHAT office in MUSC 234 or call the office (905) 525-9140 ext. 27500 for the volunteer to come to the student.

MSU Maccess

Maccess is offering multiple events during the exam season. SLIME (Students Lounging in Maccess for Exams) consists of two workshops in MUSC 313/311: the first is on December 7, where students can make their own slime from 2:00PM - 6:00PM, and the second on December 14 is for students to paint a small canvas in order to de-stress from 2:00PM - 6:00PM.

Additionally, Maccess is hosting Study & Chill in the Maccess Space (MUSC B111) on Tuesday December 12 and 19 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM. 

MSU SHEC and MSU Maroons

SHEC and Maroons are collaborating to deliver exam care packages to students this exam season. The care packages have some small snacks and treats, along with a few de-stressor items such as bubble wrap. Those interested in receiving a care package should like and follow both SHEC and the Maroons on Facebook and Twitter, and stay tuned for a post on Friday, December 8 with instructions. Volunteers will be delivering the packages to any library on campus.

Compass Information Centre

The 2017-2018 exam / holiday hours of operation for Compass are the following:

Thursday, December 7 - Wednesday, December 20
Monday to Friday: 11:30AM - 5:30PM
Saturday: 11AM - 3PM
Thursday, December 21: 10AM - 2PM

Compass is closed from:
Friday, December 22, 2017 - Wednesday, January 3, 2018

Regular hours of operation resume Thursday, January 4, 2018.

The Pulse + free yoga and meditation classes

The Pulse is open for the following regular term hours until December 17:

Monday to Friday: 6:00AM - 12:30AM
Saturday and Sunday: 8:30AM - 10:30PM
The Pulse has the following exam hours from December 18 - 22:
6:00AM - 11PM every day, except on December 22 when the Pulse will close at 5PM.
Please note: Pop-Up Pulse is closed during exam season.

During the entire month of December, there will be weekly drop-in Fitness and Spin classes that students are welcome to attend as a study break, the exsisting student membership includes access to these classes.

The Mindfulness Centre in DBAC is also open to students formeditating, breathing or stretching. In this space, there are free exam stress relief yoga and meditation classes being offered by McMaster Athletics & Recreation. The classes are 55 minutes long and open only to McMaster students/DBAC members, staff and faculty. They are drop-in, no registration required, however space is limited.

Chaplaincy Centre and McMaster University Student Centre (MUSC)

As of Thursday, December 7, MUSC is open until Midnight for extended study periods. Students can come into MUSC 222 and book a room for silent study at their convenience on a first-come, first-serve basis.

In addition, The Chaplaincy Centre and OPIRG present The Exam Hospitality Drop-in Centre, running from December 10 - 17 (excluding Saturday 16th) from 5:30PM - 9PM. This year, it will be held outside the Chaplaincy Centre Room in MUSC 231. There will be free fairtrade hot chocolate and cookies offered throughout the evenings as a chance for students to take a break during study periods. Students are encouraged to bring their own travel mugs, although paper cups are provided. Everyone is welcome to drop by.

 McMaster Alumni Association 

The Alumni Association is hosting two events this exam season:

Free pancake breakfast co-sponsored by the MSU on Friday December at 10:30 a.m. inside TwelvEighty.

The annual Exam Wishes on Tuesday, December 12 and Thursday, December 14. Students are encouraged to follow @McMasterAlumni on twitter for more details.


There is a McMaster Libraries Toy and Food Drive ending December 12 in support of local Hamilton charities. Non-perishable food items, new/unwrapped toys for children up to the age of 16, gift certificates for teens, and items for family pets are encouraged. Donation boxes are located at Health Sciences, Innis, Mills and Thode Libraries.

Liam The Library Dog will visit multiple libraries on December 13, 2017 during the following times:

Innis Library: 11:00AM - 11:30AM|
Mills Library: 1:00PM - 2:00PM
Thode Library: 3:00PM - 3:30PM

Liam will also visit the Heath Sciences Library on Friday, December 8 at 1:00 PM.

Innis Library

Innis is open from 8:30AM until 2:00AM for a silent late night study, Monday through Thursday. On Friday, Innis is open from 8:30AM - 10:45PM. On Saturday, the hours are 10:30AM - 5:45PM. On Sunday, the hours are 1:00PM - 7:45PM. There are special hours on December 21 from 8:30AM - 7:45PM, and on December 22 from 9:00AM - 4:45PM.

Innis will have a communal jigsaw puzzle for any student who would like to take a break from studying. There will also be colouring sheets, word find, crosswords, apples, along with a contest to win a prize pack (to be determined). 

Mills Library

Mills Library is open from 8:00AM - 10:45PM, Monday through Sunday. The Learning Commons is open 24/7 Monday through Sunday. There are special hours on December 21 from 8:00AM - 7:45PM in the library and from 12:00AM - 7:45PM in the Learning Commons. On December 22, both the library and the Learning Commons are open from 9:00AM - 4:45PM.

There is a new quiet study space available in Mills Library during exams on the first floor called the Connections Centre. The area is open until the end of the exams and the seating is limited.

Thode Library

Thode is open 24/7 Monday through Sunday from December 4 - 22. There are special hours on December 21 from 12:00AM - 7:45PM and December 22 from 9:00AM - 4:45PM.

Health Sciences Library

Special hours for the Health Sciences Library are the following:

December 21 from 8:00AM- 7:45PM.
December 22 from 9:00AM- 4:45PM.
The library is closed from December 23 - January 1.
Regular hours resume on January 4.

There are also puzzles available around the library for students to work on and complete as a break from studying.
