The MSU Emergency First Response Team (EFRT) is hosting their public relation week from Monday, March 12 to Friday, March 16. Each day, the team will be set up outside their office (MUSC 103) in order to talk to students about topics related to EFRT.

“This week aims to spread awareness of what the EFRT does at McMaster and how students can be safer,” said Dunavan Morris-Janzen, EFRT Public Relations Coordinator. “In addition, we want to inform interested students on the process involved in joining our team.”

On Monday from 12:30-2:30PM, the team will be talking about three life threatening emergencies - Anaphylaxis, cardiac arrest, and opioid overdoses - and how in these instances, EFRT can perform life saving interventions, such as administering an EpiPen, performing CPR and using an AED, and administering Naloxone respectively.

On Tuesday from 12:30-3:30PM, EFRT volunteers will take students through a life in the day of an EFRT responder, such as where the team eats and sleeps, how long a normal shift is, what responders do on call, and the process involved with responding to an emergency on campus.

On Wednesday from 12:30-3:30PM, volunteers will demonstrate a few treatments that we perform at calls, such as applying a tensor to a sprained ankle, splinting a broken wrist, or slinging a dislocated shoulder. They will also dissect some of the big yellow backpacks volunteers use in order to show students what equipment is brought to emergencies, and how this equipment can help the team deliver a high quality of care to patients.

On Thursday from 11:30AM-2:30PM, drug and alcohol safety will be discussed with the goal of teaching people the signs and symptoms of alcohol poising and drug overdose, and what to do if they suspect someone has had too much to drink or consumed too much of another substance.

Finally, on Friday from 12:30-3:30PM, the team will take people through the entire application process for the EFRT beginning in the second week of September.

Students can keep up to date on the events throughout the public relation week by visiting their Facebook.
