In March of 2017, students voted in favour of the creation of a new Student Activity Building (SAB) and expansion to the Pulse during a special referendum. Previous years of student consultation campaigns helped influence the structure of the interior layout and the floor plans, resulting in a design that includes additional fitness studios, study areas, a multi-faith prayer space, a grocery store, and meeting rooms. The ceremonial groundbreaking of the new building took place on September 14, 2018. The MSU Board of Directors, joined by senior leaders from Athlectics & Recreation and Student Affairs celebrated
“This addition to campus represents years of student consultation being put into action,” says Ikram Farah, MSU President. “Many different groups collaborated in order to make the Student Activity Building and Pulse expansion a reality.”
Undergraduate students are encouraged to fill out the latest Student Activity Building Survey regarding interior design features. This survey continues the student consultation and research completed by last year’s SAB Space Allocation Ad-Hoc Committee. Students can access the survey by clicking here and have the option to be entered into a draw to win one of five $100 meal plan flex dollars prizes.
“Now that the construction of the Student Activity Building is nearing, the MSU is gathering feedback with regard to what students want to see from an interior design standpoint,” says Alexandrea Johnston, Associate Vice President (Finance).“The survey is a great opportunity to provide your unique perspective and preferences on topics ranging from colour scheme, types of furniture, and even the formal title of the building.”
Construction of the SAB begins October 2018 and the project is expected to be completed in the academic year of 2020/2021.
