SHEC it out: new light therapy and Sex 101 from the Student Health Education Centre
October 22, 2018 at 12:00 pm
The Student Health Education Centre (SHEC)has recently expanded their service offerings with the addition of a light therapy lamp. The lamp mimics natural outdoor light, which can help with one’s mood and assist with regulating sleep patterns. During the current autumn and upcoming winter months as days become shorter, the lamp may be especially useful. Students are welcome to come into the SHEC service space in MUSC 202 to check out the lamp; volunteers will be present to provide peer support if needed.
SHEC’s popular event, Sex 101, is back this year for two nights in partnership with McMaster medical students. SEX 101 is a night filled with games, trivia, and frank conversations covering important topics including health, relationships, and consent. There will also be free snacks and safe sex items for participants, along with the opportunity to win an Amazon Echo Alexa at the event. The dates of the event are as follows: Tuesday, October 23 from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM in Mary Keyes Room 211 and Thursday, October 25 from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM in Hedden Ravine Room.
SHEC is a peer-run health promotion, education, and referral service for McMaster students. The peer support, events, and campaigns offered by SHEC engage students about health-related issues. Some of the free services and products offered by SHEC include anonymous and confidential pregnancy testing, confidential peer support, condoms, lubricant, dental dams, menstrual products, light therapy, and a private nursing space.
