MSU Diversity Services launches Finding the Words campaign

Starting on April 7, Diversity Services will launch Finding the Words, a storytelling campaign that aims to uplift the voices of students with marginalized identities that often go unheard. From experiences of having one’s identity questioned when it does not conform, to the ways in which folks adjust their behaviour to ‘fit in’, Finding the Words brings stories of fellow Marauders who have something to share.
Melanie, one of the students participating in the campaign, shares of a time in Grade 6 French class, where there was an assigned reading on Oprah Winfrey.
“I asked, “Who’s Oprah?” As soon as I said it, I knew I’d made a big mistake—there was absolute shock on my classmates’ faces. And then, the inevitable: “What do you mean you don’t know who Oprah is? Everybody knows Oprah.” I’m sure people don’t mean for it to be exclusionary, but it is. Suddenly, I feel like an outsider. Because no matter how Canadian my accent is, or how many years I’ve lived here for, there will always be some knowledge that every 8-year-old in the country knows that I don’t."
