History of Shinerama
In 1961, Shinerama began as a way for first year university students at Waterloo Lutheran University (now Wilfred Laurier University) to do something for others as part of their Orientation week activities. In its first year, Shinerama raised approximately $1,000 for a local charity.
The Waterloo Chapter of the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CCFF) saw great potential in Shinerama, and introduced the idea of raising funds through a student shoeshining campaign to the CCFF Board of Directors. Preparations for a national Shinerama campaign advanced rapidly, and in 1964, eight universities and colleges participated in the inaugural Shinerama campaign, benefiting cystic fibrosis (CF) research and care.
Since then, Shinerama has become a Canada-wide success story, involving students from more than 60 campuses from Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador to Burnaby, British Columbia. Shinerama has evolved from just shining shoes on “Shine Day” to a campaign that includes numerous events, such as barbeques, car washes, charity casinos, and sporting events. The students’ creativity is the only limit!
In 2014, over 35,000 student shiners from across Canada raised more than 1.1 million dollars to help fight cystic fibrosis, proving that by working together, students really can make a difference in their communities, and in Canada.
When Shinerama first began, most children with CF did not live above the age of 4. Today, many of those with CF are expected to live to be 50, and that is only continuing to rise.
McMaster University has been involved in Shinerama since 1965. This year we are expecting over 1500 student shiners to help us beat 2014’s fundraising success of almost $180,000. Our goal is to remain the number one Shinerama fundraising school in the country!
We are personally responsible for a very large portion of the national total for Shinerama. Thank you so much for your support in our campaign, keep up the amazing work!!
