Pulse & Recreation Expansion and Student Activity Building Referendum

Campaigning for the Special Referendum  is now underway! Campaigning will close on March 23rd at 5 pm, and voting will be taking place from March 22nd at 9AM - March 23rd at 5PM.

Following is the question as it will appear on the ballot:

This past January, students were asked to vote on an Athletics & Recreation and Student Activity Building Referendum. This ballot failed. In response to the vote, McMaster University has committed to contributing an additional $10 million to the project to subsidize student costs, as detailed in this letter from the Provost (found here). This altered proposal was put forth to the Student Representative Assembly (SRA) on February 26, 2017 in a memo (found here) and the SRA subsequently  sent this new question to referendum. This will be a simple yes or no question. Below is the proposed fee structure.

Current Fees

All MSU members currently contribute $117.49 to the Athletics and Recreation Activity Fee (A&R Activity Fee), as well as $4.72 per unit (to a maximum of 30 units or $141.60) to the Athletics and Recreation Building Fee (A&R Building Fee). For a student taking 30 units a year, the total of these two fees is $259.09 per year. These fees increase by Consumer Price Index (CPI) annually. In the year 2023, the A&R Building Fee is scheduled  to decrease to represent the student share of  operating costs only.

Pulse Expansion and New Student Activity Building

*Please note, in addition to the increased fee structure noted below, a YES vote will continue the current A&R Activity Fee, as well as the A&R Building Fee past 2023, as outlined in the preamble above.

This referendum proposes the creation of a Student Activity Building, the expansion of the Pulse, and the creation of a twelve month Pulse membership for all full-time undergraduate students, in addition to other benefits. Details can be found here.

The A&R Building Fee will increase $2.99 per unit (to a maximum of 30 units) once the Student Activity Building opens (projected opening in 2020) for an approximate total fee of $7.71 per unit (to a maximum of 30 units) or $231.30 per year. This fee will increase annually by CPI.

The A&R Activity Fee will increase by $95, commencing in September 2017 and will increase an additional $10 when the Pulse & Recreation Expansion is complete (projected completion in 2020) for an approximate total fee of $222.49 per year. This fee will increase annually by CPI.

Do you agree to the following fee increases that would result in the expansion of the Pulse and the creation of the Student Activity Building:

The continuation of the Athletics and Recreation (A&R) Building Fee, and an increase of $2.99/unit (to a maximum of 30 units) to the A&R Building Fee effective once the Student Activity Building opens. In addition, an increase of $95 to the Athletics & Recreation Activity Fee commencing in 2017, with a further $10 increase when the Pulse & Recreation Expansion opens. All fees will increase by CPI annually.
